Next WCC Board Meeting on August 17, 2014

Greetings cavers and conservationists!

The Summer 2014 Western Cave Conservancy Meeting will be held in Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. We chose this location to better serve our loyal supporters in northern and central California and adjacent areas. This meeting is open to everyone and we hope to have a good turnout this year.

DATE: Sunday, August 17, 2014
TIME: 1:00-5:00 PM (attendees can start arriving as early as 12:30)

DETAILED DIRECTIONS

SOUTH FROM OAKLAND

  1. Drive south from the Oakland area on I-880.
  2. In the City of Fremont take the Thornton Ave. exit east over the freeway.
  3. Take the first right (south) turn; this will be Blacow Ave.
  4. Continue south over the railroad tracks to Central Ave. - about a half-mile.
  5. Turn left onto Central Ave (there is a Valero gas station and Blacow Auto Repair at the intersection) and proceed east for about two blocks.
  6. Turn right onto Los Arboles Drive and follow the RIGHT HAND curb (past two courts/short streets leading off to the left) to its end. Your goal is a Spanish style, pale yellow home with a bright magenta bougainvillea in front.

NORTH FROM SAN JOSE

  1. Take I-880 North to Fremont.
  2. Follow the above directions.

FROM THE GREAT VALLEY

  1. Take I-880 west through Berkeley and Oakland.
  2. Follow the above directions from Oakland south to Fremont.

PARKING: Parking is available on the cul-de-sac street.

REFRESHMENTS: There will be a selection of light refreshments to keep you alert through the meeting.

We chose this location to better serve our loyal supporters in northern and central California and adjacent areas. This meeting is open to everyone and we hope to have a good turnout this year.

DETAILED DIRECTIONS
FROM THE SOUTH

  1. Drive I-5 north to I-580 West
  2. Follow I-580 west to Livermore
  3. Exit on First Street (CA-84) towards downtown Livermore
  4. Turn right after about a half mile on N. Mines Road
  5. Turn left in a quarter mile onto Newbury St.
  6. Turn left after about 200 feet onto Hillside Ave.
  7. Continue about 215 feet to the Bower's home on the left.
FROM THE NORTH
  1. Drive south on I-5 to I-505 southwest to I-580 west.
  2. Follow the above directions from First Street.
EAST FROM THE SAN FRANSISCO BAY AREA
  1. Take I-238 east from I-880
  2. Take I-580 east from Castro Valley or east from I-680.
  3. Drive east along I-580 to First Street
  4. Follow above directions south from the First Street (CA-84) exit

PARKING
Parking is available on the street.

2014 Lehman Cave Lint Camp

The Western Cave Conservancy and the staff of Great Basin National Park will co-sponsor the 2014 Lehman Cave Lint Camp. Cavers are invited to participate in restoration activities in Lehman Cave in eastern Nevada on March 21 to 23, 2014.

The following is the tentative schedule that Gretchen Baker, Park ecologist and WCC Advisor, has provided:

Friday, March 21
Afternoon/evening: arrive; check in to park housing (we'll probably have a couple park houses. Participants will need to bring basic camping gear such as sleeping bag, pots and pans, towels, etc.). Refrigerators, microwaves, stoves, showers, and washing machines will be available.

In the afternoon/evening there will be potential cave trips or rope training in the maintenance shop.

Saturday, March 22
9 am: Meet at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center; lint camp training, divide into groups and work in different parts of the cave
12ish: Lunch (bring your own)
1-5ish: Lint camp work
5:30 pm: Potluck dinner/party/more rope training?

Sunday, March 23
9 am -12 pm: Lint camp work
12 pm: Lunch (bring you own)
1-3 pm: Talus Room tour
Late afternoon: depart or possible other cave trips

There's not many places to buy food, although the Border Inn in Baker has a small convenience store/cafe/motel and is open 24 hours. T&D's in Baker is occasionally open with a convenience store and restaurant.

We chose this location to better serve our loyal supporters in northern California, southern Oregon, and adjacent Nevada and Washington areas.  This meeting is open to everyone and we hope to have a good turnout this year.

DETAILED DIRECTIONS:
FROM I-5:
1.  In the city of Orland take the CA Hwy 32 exit east to Chico
2.  In Chico, Hwy 32 becomes Nord Avenue and then Walnut Street
3.  Hwy 32 will make a left turn onto 9th street; do not turn, but go straight (right lane) on Dayton Road
4.  Travel 2.6 miles south on Dayton Road and then turn left on Hegan Lane 1.9 miles
5.  Turn right at the Shouten Lane entrance to the Campus/Farm

FROM YUBA CITY and SACRAMENTO:
1.  Take US Hwy 99 North
2.  In Chico, take the Paradise/Park Avenue exit (first exit on the south of Chico) and turn left over  the freeway (west)
3.  Travel about a mile to Midway Avenue (dead end) and turn left (south)
4.  Travel  0.4 miles to Hegan Lane and turn right (west)
5.  Travel 1.4 mile and take the first left (Shouten Lane) after crossing the railroad tracks

FROM REDDING and RED BLUFF:
1.  Take US Hwy 99 South
2.  In Chico take the Paradise/Park Avenue exit (last exit on the south of Chico) and turn right (west)
3.  Travel about a mile to Midway Avenue (dead end) and turn left (south)
4.  Travel  0.4 miles to Hegan Lane and turn right (west)
5.  Travel 1.4 mile and take the first left (Shouten Lane) after crossing the railroad tracks

We will be meeting at The Farm.  Once on the Farm, follow the signs to Ag Mechanics (the second right turn) and to Shop II

PARKING:
Parking is available in the Shop II area.
